Wheel of Whatever™

[33:04] Wheel of Whatever Facebook and Apple and Google, do you think they’re really selling it and giving it away? Or do you really think it is legit, secure, and they’d never do that because it would totally kill their business?

What You’ll Learn In This Episode

**Click the time stamp to jump directly to that point in the episode.**

[1:58] We thank our sponsor, Acorns

[2:37] How Eric started

  • Since Eric was young he was fascinated with how things work and how they operated
  • While taking up computer science, the CIA was interviewing the campus
  • CIA flew Eric to Langley and asked him where he wants to work
  • Eric worked in the security department of the CIA for eight years

[3:45] Why take cybersecurity seriously

  • You need to recognize no matter who you are, what you do, what business you’re in, you are a target
  • Everybody who has a computer and in business is going to be a target
  • Cybersecurity is your responsibility

[3:45] Eric’s trick

  • Windows has a large installed base
  • 90 percent of all malware is written for Windows operating systems
  • Mac is no more secure than Windows

[7:08] Hackers are always going to take advantage of us when we’re emotional and we’re not thinking straight

[9:21] What to do with business websites

  • Unless you’re a very, very large company, outsource it. Outsource it to somebody who that is their business
  • Never put critical data or critical information on a public website

[10:29] Why separate server for critical data versus the public facing

  • Defensive depth and making it that much harder for the adversary
  • Somebody can get in and out very quick, compromise your data, and you’ll never notice it
  • You have more time to react, more time to respond, and more time to protect to control your critical information

[11:19] Three tier architecture

  • You have your internet facing server that is directly accessible from the internet
  • It then goes through a series or middleware
  • And then your back end database

[12:00] What is security

  • It’s about controlling damage and acceptable level of risk
  • What is the risk you’re willing to accept
  • What is the functionality
  • What is the risk and what is that acceptable level of risk
  • What am I willing to pay to achieve that?

[13:38] When to put security

  • Security needs to be engaged from the beginning
  • What is the security impact?
  • What is the tolerable level of risk that we’re willing to allow?”

[15:01] The F word is a dangerous word in cybersecurity

  • Free is not free
  • Many people get in so much trouble because there’s free apps
  • They don’t pay attention
  • General rule is if there’s not a commercial app, I don’t use it.

[16:40] Eric’s recommendation

  • Good news: most apps, most websites, most software that you utilize has security built in
  • Bad news: it’s not turned on by default
  • Turn on two factor authentication
  • Turn on account notification
  • Option 1: you could have a two to three second inconvenience several times a day, where you get notified of things going on with your account
  • Option 2: don’t be inconvenienced. And then in seven months, you have your entire bank account wiped out. Which option would you like?

[19:13] Eric’s success story

  • An international organization was spending $35 million a year on secuirty
  • They weren’t focusing on their critical data. And they weren’t monitoring or looking at what was happening
  • Eric’s company realized that six of their executives laptops, including the CEO, was infected with monitoring software
  • Their security is increased by 200 percent
  • Their budget in half by almost 50 percent

[21:20] Eric’s focus

  • Become a business enabler
  • How can we increase your security and increase your productivity and profits at the same time

[23:01] Eric’s thinking time

  • Three days of every month, Eric goes away
  • Eric steps away from business
  • Eric slows down and thinks of what are the top problems
  • He brainstorms on creative solutions

[24:07] How much of movies are real and how much is just Hollywood stuff

  • Those movies become more and more realistic, and more and more probable
  • They’re starting to interconnect all these systems
  • The probability of somebody to hack or break in is much more likely.
  • The probability of attacks like that happening or occurring are increasing
  • Because most companies aren’t looking in the right area, were not detecting or even realizing that it is occurring

[27:00] An easier simpler method is what if I stole $1 from 20 million people

  • Most people don’t look at their credit card statements close enough
  • Most people wouldn’t recognize it.
  • Today’s attackers is all about a little bit from a lot of people than a lot from one person

[30:54] Why people aren’t being safe

  • We’re at a transition point where people just have to get used to the habits
  • Start putting on some safety measures
  • We’re just in that discomfort of transitioning over to a safer world
  • Cybersecurity is not hard if you accept the fact that you’re a target and it’s your responsibility
  • A little bit goes a long way in just building those good cyber habits

[33:04] Wheel of Whatever

  • Facebook and Apple and Google, do you think they’re really selling it and giving it away? Or do you really think it is legit, secure, and they’d never do that because it would totally kill their business?
  • Option C is a little bit of both
  • These companies are app-solutely utilizing our data for financial gain
  • They’re not actually selling it or giving it to third parties because that would kill their business
  • They’re absolutely using it but they’re not directly selling it. They’re indirectly selling it to marketers
  • My biggest concern is what happens, not if, but when, these companies that have all of our data get hacked and get compromised, then we start having major problems very, very quickly.

[38:01] Eric’s observation

  • We spend a large percent of our lives online
  • In the physical world, people have a lot of common sense
  • When it comes to cyberspace, common sense is a train that leaves the station and never ever comes back

[40:07] Time out to thank sponsor, Acorns

[41:20] Imperfect Action Round

    • The fastest path to the cash is be visible and be out there
    • The biggest problem prospects are making is they want to go in and make it perfect
  • The best way to maximize customer lifetime value is treat your existing customers better than your new customers

[43:35] Eric’s philosophies

  • At any moment, the best thing you could possibly do is the right thing
  • The second best possible thing you could do is the wrong thing

  • The third worst possible thing you could do is nothing
